Abstract

Interventions implemented in educational settings are needed to support the academic and social success of rural children and rural ethnic minority children in particular. Educational research on effective strategies to promote students' social, emotional, and learning needs has burgeoned in recent years and resulted in the availability of numerous evidence-based interventions, curricula, and approaches accessible to schools and communities. This chapter focuses on instructional, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions for rural children and families, including rural minority families. Home-school partnership is emphasized as an essential intervention element, and intervention programs based on this principle, and implemented successfully in rural communities, are described. Finally, methodological challenges for intervention research in rural communities with minority children and families are outlined along with strategies to overcome the obstacles.
