A Maritime Landscape of Old Navy Cove and Deadman’s Island

Abstract

Old Navy Cove and Deadman’s Island (8SR740) are associated with the Navy Cove shipwrecks, a long history of careenage, a late-nineteenth century marine railway structure, a possible quarantine station, and six coffins that eroded out of the island in the fall of 2005. Maritime cultural landscape theory contextualizes these maritime activities by relating historical, environmental, and archaeological data on both the land and the sea. Integrated within a Geographic Information System (GIS), this information is combined with digital technologies to realize the past uses and perception of Old Navy Cove and Deadman’s Island with a maritime landscape approach.
