The primary two steps in the production of paper are the transformation of a fibrous raw material into pulp and the papermaking of the pulp. First, the harvested woodWood is processed to separate the fibers from the lignin, the unusable part of the wood. Chemical or mechanical processes can be used to produce pulp. Depending on the kind and grade of paper that will be produced, the pulp is then bleached and further processed. The pulp is dried and pressed in the paper factory to make paper sheets. A growing proportion of paper and paper products are recycled after use. Paper that is not recycled is either thrown away or burned.
