Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) by the posterior approach is described in this chapter. Like other MIS techniques, the approach was developed from conventional surgery. Bernard von Langenbeck described the first posterolateral conventional approach for THA in 1874 [1]. According to Tronzo [2], at least 13 distinct variations of the approach have been described since then. The most noteworthy of these were modifications made by Kocher [3], Gibson [4], and Moore [5]. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
