Abstract

Various methanogenic bacteria belonging to the orders Methanobacteriales, Methanococcales, and Methanomicrobiales were examined for the presence of cytochromes. Those methanogens which are capable of growing only on H2 + CO2 or formate were found to lack cytochromes. However, membrane-bound cytochromes were detected in species able to utilize methanol, methylamines or acetate. © 1983.
