Abstract

The Purari is Papua New Guinea's third largest river after the Fly and the Sepik. Its catchment area is 26 300 km2 at Wabo and about 33 670 km2 at the coast. Much of the Purari basin is covered by undisturbed humid tropical rain forest which is maintained by frequent and often heavy rainfall although there are some areas of grassland in the highlands. Hydrological records for the Purari basin are generally poor although there are a few exceptions.-from Authors
