Abstract

This chapter on ancient DNA (aDNA) sample preparation and analysis provides a brief overview of the different types and origins of aDNA, and the different states of preservation. The basic principles of sample treatment, DNA preparation and DNA analysis which are presented assume that the polymerase chain reaction will be applied to the aDNA. Problems in handling aDNA are discussed along with information on how to avoid them
