Abstract

Immediately after the termination of National Socialist rule, historians in the Federal Republic made a start on the academic assessment of it. Explanations were sought as to how such a violent, expansionist regime had been able to come to power, and attempts were made to slot the National Socialist system of government into the overall context of German history.1
