Abstract

Rheumatic diseases are characterized by inflammation of joints and periarticular structures. The connective tissues are the targets or bystanders in the inflammatory process. This self-directed learning module discusses the anatomic and physiologic components of the connective tissue and how they are affected by inflammation. It is a section of the chapter on rehabilitation in joint and connective tissue diseases for the Self-Directed Medical Knowledge Program Study Guide for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The role of cells in regulating the inflammatory events is also discussed, as are forces that influence joint motion and stability. © 1988.
