Abstract

Electronics serves mankind in communication with each other, with machines, among machines, in mobility, in health-care. All of these are real-world or real-world-like functions. Relevant signals and information are perceived on logarithmic scales, where noticeable differences make up a constant percentage of the actual signal level. While this was realized in digital audio, it has been neglected in video because of linear charge-coupled-devices sensors and linear digital signal-processing. The perception-driven Human Visual System (HVS) will be the strongest driving force for the performance and energy-efficiency of sustainable, intelligent real-world electronic systems.
