Context-aware technologies promise great potential in Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). They are transforming the learning environment in a way that we are now frequently surrounded and immersed in learning experiences. However, as transformation arises in TEL as a result of these technologies, so does the challenge of understanding and applying a sound pedagogical foundation when utilizing these technologies for effective learning. It is clear that a comprehensive and inclusive framework is needed for ensuring sound pedagogy when applying these technologies. This paper presents a framework for the integration of pedagogy and technology in a Context-Aware Learning Environment (CALE). The elements identified as critical in guiding the development of this framework include: ensuring sound pedagogical foundation; addressing the uniqueness of distance learning environment and the social aspect of learning; considering context in which learning occurs and providing adaptive and/or personalized learning in order to ensure that learning is tailored to learners’ needs based on the context in which learning occurs. The CALE framework may be significant to designers, developers of CALEs and instructors because it provides a guideline on how CALE can be rooted best in a sound pedagogical foundation.
