This chapter outlines the first detections of interfacial segregation in the past centuries, introduces the term “segregation” as it appears in metallurgy, and explains the difference among its three types – macrosegregation in casts, microsegregation in case of dendritic crystallisation and nanosegregation as the grain boundary enrichment by the impurity/solute atoms.
