HIV and aging have similar effects on global cognitive functioning. Progressive brain dysfunction associated with aging has been linked to neuronal loss and to physiological impairments with reduced neurotransmitter production and inflammatory processes. This chapter reviews some of the emerging data on central nervous system (CNS) changes associated with HIV disease and aging.
