Abstract

Spinal cord stimulation and neuromodulation have experienced profound growth over the last 10 years due to advances in specific neural targeting, novel and disruptive stimulation parameters, and advances in wireless technology. Subsequently, device companies have formed to bring these new technologies to patients with more than triple the number in this competitive market. Recent neuromodulation clinical trials document this progress as new technologies demonstrate superiority over some forms of traditional stimulation. In light of the current concern over the opioid epidemic, the field of neuromodulation will continue to progress as one of the strongest evidence-based treatments for pain control. This chapter summarizes recent advances and devices on the market as well as offer a framework to choose the most appropriate and effective modality for pain treatment.
