Abstract

Twentieth century disease - barely described in the nineteenth century with escalating incidence in the twentieth century. Ascribed to reciprocal fall in infantile gastrointestinal diarrheal diseases and, paradoxically, improvements in hygiene/living standards. Lifetime risk ∼7% (in Western populations). © 2010 Springer-Verlag London.
