Abstract

Experimental models of the disease, as experimental allergic encephalitis (EAE), a virus-induced demyelination, and several clinical and laboratory data suggest that MS is a multifactorial disease in which one or more environmental factors contribute to trigger an immune response directed against myelin antigens in genetically susceptible subjects. From a pathogenic point of view it is important to consider: genetic, viral and immunological factors. Recently many researchers cast doubt on the classification of MS as an autoimmune disease suggesting that a chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) plays a role in the cause of MS.
