Abstract

Three general groups of studies are reviewed. The first focuses on the physical characteristics of the prison. This research describes the design, space, and other structural features of the prison setting. The second group of studies attempts to conceptualize what it is to live in prison by identifying those social characteristics that "press" on indi- viduals and represent what is important to them within the unique con- text of prisol!. The final group of studies, rather than characterizing the environment, describe what happens when change disrupts traditional social structures
