The adult nervous system is essentially a static system (or one which is in decline) and the clinical neurological examination is therefore cross-sectional. The paediatric neurologist, however, has to examine all of the various pathways of the nervous system, mindful of the timing of the appearance (and disappearance) of various developmental signs. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2010.
