Abstract

The contradictory appearance of the present gang problem in the Netherlands has provided new opportunities for research on the use of positive, street-oriented role models with a local background. This chapter describes the development and what has been learned so far. It also explores one of the research opportunities in more detail: an experiment in a Dutch disadvantaged neighborhood called Rogue District, which has had a persistent gang problem for many years. Ethnographic research in this neighborhood has led to the start of a brand new role model project, aimed at reducing youth crime and gang membership while providing more appealing social opportunities for youth at risk by using informal authority of local role models. Based on the first findings, the potential of using positive, street-oriented role models in other Dutch cities with persistent gang problems will be discussed. Furthermore, the experiment leads to questions concerning the need for more comparative and international research necessary for developing and implementing the use of role models in a comprehensive approach of Dutch street gangs.
