Video coding systems may greatly differ from each other, as they consist of complicated functional modules and each module can be realized by using different techniques. For the interoperability in communication, video coding standards are developed to restrict various video coding systems, such that manufacturers can successfully interwork with each other by producing compliant encoders and decoders, and at the same time still have the freedom to develop competitive and innovative products. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
