Short bowel syndrome in neonatal intensive care unit and enteral feeding

Abstract

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the most common cause of intestinal failure in infants, occurring after surgical resection, congenital defects, or disease of the bowel. In neonates and young infants, necrotizing enterocolitis, gastroschisis, intestinal atresia, and intestinal malrotation/volvulus are the leading causes of SBS. In this chapter, the clinical features, dietary management, complications, and prognostic factors in SBS are reviewed.
