Acute and chronic maternal medical problems are considered in relation to breast feeding. Infectious diseases under discussion include sporadic puerperal mastitis, breast abscess formation during post-partum mastitis, epidemic puerperal mastitis, painful nipples caused by Candida albicans, tuberculosis, herpes viruses, rotaviruses, and hepatitis B virus. Continuation of breast feeding in each case is discussed. Breast feeding in women with chronic illness (psychiatric illness, diabetes mellitus and cystic fibrosis) and following augmentation or reduction mammoplasty are also discussed. Relactation and induced lactation are considered briefly.
