Abstract

Primary schools are in a unique position to implement outdoor learning. Most primary school teachers are women, many of whom do not regularly access the outdoors. An outdoor learning case study was completed with a typical female primary school teacher, who through mentoring gained the necessary skills to teach outside. The Year 1 children involved in the study developed significantly in the areas of curriculum and engagement, well-being, and making connections to the past, places, and experiences. This chapter recommends that with professional development, primary school teachers can be empowered to teach curricula outside.
