This article examines the voting behavior in the referendum on the infrastructure project ‘Stuttgart 21’ using aggregate level data on local and district levels. The main focus lies on empirically testing hypotheses concerning the NIMBY (Not In My BackYard) attitudes of voters. The data analysis coni rms the relevance of spatial distance for the voting behavior. Furthermore, the strength of the Green party in a municipality has a signii cant inl uence on the approval of Stuttgart 21, while socio-structural characteristics don’t seem to play a decisive role.
