Abstract

The need for more and more information from less and less DNA sample, rapidly, has led laboratories from the use of minisatellites (variable number of tandem repeats, VNTRs) for human identification (HID) to the use of microsatellites (short tandem repeats, STRs). Commercially available STR amplification kits permit the rapid analysis of compromised DNA samples, yielding discriminating information that can be compared among laboratories. This chapter will discuss STR profile generation using the commercially available AmpFlSTR® (registered trademark) Identifiler® (registered trademark) PCR Amplification Kit from Applied Biosystems by Life Technologies™ (unregistered trademark).
