Due to its stereotyped cellular architecture, the cerebellum has always constituted a useful model system for studying the basic organization and development of synaptic circuits. This chapter describes the current state of knowledge relating to the development of cerebellar glutamate and GABA synapses and reviews recent studies on the molecular and activity-dependent mechanisms that control the spatial specifi city of synaptogenesis.
