Muscle perfusion, and capillary and intramyocytic oxygenation can be probed non-invasively in vivo by functional NMR techniques, arterial spin labelling combined with imaging, BOLD imaging and deoxymyoglobin 1H spectroscopy, respectively. After adequate adaptation of equipment, these measurements can be performed in parallel, together with 31P spectroscopy and provide a comprehensive analysis of various facets of oxygen metabolism in dynamic protocols, in humans as well as in animal models. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
