Abstract

Fetal MRI is an interactive scanning of the moving fetus owed to the use of advanced MRI technique. Fetal MRI should be carried out in a center containing an up-to-date MRI scanner in presence of a qualified radiologist. It is preferred that fetal MRI scanning and image interpretation to be carried out by the same radiologist who must have recognized MRI training, and adequate experience in fetal MR imaging. Fetal development is a dynamic process; fetal organs can change their appearance on fetal MRI on a weekly basis. For appropriate fetal MRI acquisition and image interpretation, the radiologist has to know the developing fetal MRI anatomy, recognize pathology, and understand the short- and long-term consequences of fetal abnormalities. Referral clinical data and up-to-date ultrasound information enable a more focused approach to do and interpret fetal MRI. Systematic evaluation of fetal MR images allows recognition of the developing fetal anatomy, detection of subtle abnormalities, and evaluation of complex fetal anomalies. Accurate fetal MRI report can provide valuable information for prenatal counseling. Communication of the radiologist with the referring physician and clinicians involved in the pregnancy care would help in determining pregnancy prognosis and management.
