An algorithm has been developed for icon placement on a real-time map. The algorithm is based on a least disturbing definition and places the icons in an area where they hide the cartographic data as little as possible. To find this area the algorithm performs a spiral search on a pre-computed grid. The computational complexity is low, which makes it possible to use the algorithm in real-time applications. A case study has been performed, which demonstrates the improvement in icon placement made by the algorithm.
