Abstract

The hydration of portland cement can be modelled in a simple way by a degree of hydration based model, in which the heat production rate is the product of two factors. The first factor is depending on the state of the hydration process, represented by the degree of hydration. The second factor is depending on the actual temperature. This model has already been proposed in 1982 by Prof. H.W. Reinhardt. This paper gives an overview how this model can be extended towards blended cements, like blast furnace slag cement, or towards powder rich cement systems as present in self-compacting concrete (e.g. with limestone filler). The analytical model can be extended with an extra reaction, describing the influence of the blast furnace slag or the limestone filler. Especially in the case of self-compacting concrete, the model parameters depend on composition parameters like cement/powder ratio.
