Tribute: The announcement of Denis McQuail’s death on 25th June 2017 came as a blow to his many friends and colleagues throughout the world of media and communication scholarship, and beyond. Denis, of course, had a special place in the history of the European Journal of Communication (EJC): he was one of the founding editors and he remained Editor Emeritus until he died. Indeed the title was invented for him, given his unique position in relation to the Journal. The three current editors all had reason to value his friendship and his support and advice, freely and frequently given and always hugely valued. To recognize and record Denis McQuail’s unique contribution to our field, as well as his exceptional personal and professional qualities, the EJC tribute that follows comprises a short essay by the editors, and a number of brief notes from colleagues reflecting on their own particular memories and experiences in working with Denis McQuail.1 Denis
