Abstract

Three major factors determined the diversity of terrestrial plant life: the present geographical position as surrogate for climate, the history of climate, and horizontal and vertical tectonic movements at geological time scales. The result is a planet with very diverse marine and terrestrial systems (2.1) The climatic and edaphic conditions led to the development of taxonomically, morphologically and anatomically very diverse plant stems.
