Abstract

The main research inquiry of this book is to investigate the extent of which the selection of higher education through the Gaokao is based on meritocratic criteria in contemporary China. This section links the previous theoretical discussion on meritocracy to the empirical context of higher education selection in China and establishes the research questions in such a way as to test the main hypothesis.
