Abstract

A pilot programme trialling Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) and the theories of Feuerstein’s Mediation Learning Experience (MLE) was initiated at Royal Oak Intermediate School in Auckland, New Zealand. The programme involved a class of 28 students, aged 11-12 years. It aimed to evaluate the effects of FIE and MLE on the academic progress and self-efficacy of the students. Throughout the project there was an underlying focus on ipsative assessment and a focus on developing the students’ skills in self-assessment. During the project there were clear changes in the students’ metacognitive awareness and their behavioural approach to tasks and tests evident in their reflective journals.
