Abstract

In the field of product development, the application of high-tech materials enables new concepts. Smart materials generate innovative products through controllable properties. An increasing number of research studies and first successful experiences in industrial use support the importance. Promising are above all shape memory alloys (SMAs), which are investigated in the following, regarding the area of the product development process. Special focus is on necessary constraints and parameters of application, passive and active structure. This leads to the detection of possible applications within adaptive designs and a first approach to a method for the design and integration of SMAs.
