Role of Peritoneal Dialysis in Acute Kidney Injury

Abstract

The use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in acute kidney injury (AKI) or critically ill patients remains a controversial topic. However, the interest in using PD for AKI and critically ill patients has been increasing in the last few years. Due to its significant cost and infrastructural benefits over hemodialysis (HD), acute PD is often used in developing countries, where cost and available sources constitute a significant issue. This chapter discusses the (a) advantages of acute PD over HD, (b) techniques for acute PD including the prescription, (c) complications, and (d) contraindications of acute PD and (e) acute PD in children.
