An analytically convenient reference compression equation of state for solids is offered. Two distinct volume compliance properties of a solid are examined; namely, the bulk modulus and the inertial modulus. The inertial modulus is assumed linear in the pressure and integrates to an equation of state that exhibits improved agreement with experimental compression data for aluminum and copper over comparable analytic equations of state. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.
