Abstract

This latest review of progress and development in the realm of physical hydrology can profitably use two events of the past 12 months as a keay to highlighting several themes worthy of discussion. First, the appearence of the English translation of the Russian text World water balance and water resources of the earth and its companion Atlas of the world water balance, itself of considerable significance, provides a pointer to recent progress in our knowledge of the global water balance and of developments in hydrological mapping. Second, the popular interest and publicity generated by Skylab's return to earth also provides a timely reminder of the considerable impact of satellite-based technology on the science of hydrology
