Observed 30 hyperactive and 30 normal children (aged 6-21 yrs, PPVT IQ > 89) during free play with their mothers and while completing a set of 15 instructions presented to them by their mothers. Mothers were administered the Child Behavior Checklist, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Personality Inventory for Children (PIC), and a marital adjustment scale and family history questionnaire. Results show that hyperactive Ss were less compliant and more negative than normal Ss, and their mothers responded more negatively to their compliance than mothers of normal Ss. Mothers of hyperactive Ss reported more depression, marital discord, and psychiatric problems in their relatives, and they rated their children more deviant on 15 of 16 PIC scales than normal Ss. Hyperactive boys received more direction and praise and had greater maternal concern about their adjustment than hyperactive girls or normal Ss. (38 ref) ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved).
