This introduction to the Handbook argues for the importance of creativity and culture as an emerging field within the social sciences and humanities. It considers both the benefits and the challenges associated with engaging in creativity and culture research. The two phenomena are considered in turn and key metaphors offered for each in an effort to foster further reflection. Culture, it is argued, is often conceived of as achievement, as a toolbox, as a `garden', and as dialogue, while creativity is commonly understood as a label, the engine of cultural production, a form of diffusion, and the fabric of culture. The Handbook is presented towards the end in terms of content and its general organisation. The introduction concludes with a few acknowledgements.
