Abstract

Syphilis is an infectious disease that was first described 500 years ago. However it is farfrom being considered a ghost from the past, accounting for the most prevalent venereal diseases that may affect the fetus or the newborn. The prevention and in utero treatment of congenital Syphilis is possible as long as the screening is correctly made to all pregnant women, what is considered an advantage when compared to other sexually transmitted diseases that affect the newborn. Despite decades of experience with congenital syphilis, problems still arise in case definition, diagnostic evaluation, treatment and follow-up; that is the reason why the authors propose this guideline of evaluation and treatment of congenital syphilis.
