It is useful to perform an anorectal manometry in individuals with pelvic organ prolapse who have substantial defecatory symptoms or fecal incontinence. Manometric evaluation can provide functional anorectal data in patients who are affected by posterior prolapse (rectocele, enterocele, sigmoidocele): anal sphincter activity, rectal compliance, and rectal sensation may be tested. Manometric signs of defective anal sphincter function or impaired anal relaxation may be detected, depending on concomitant rectal pathologies. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Milan.
