Acute respiratory infections are currently one of the biggest causes of childhood morbidity, caused by viral or bacterial microorganisms, from common cold to pneumonia; before a respiratory disease in children, mothers’ knowledge and practices may be affected by low scholarship or poor access to adequate information. To determine knowledge and practices on acute respiratory infections in mothers of children under 5 years of age in children's homes, Soledad-Atlántico. 2019-1. Quantitative approach to the descriptive level was carried out, performed with 115 mothers of children under 5 years of age, which attending one of the 12 Children's Homes in the Soledad municipality. For data collection, a survey prepared by the authors previously validated by experts. 48% of mothers consider coughing as an alarm sign, 29% of mothers associate respiratory symptoms with the ingestion of cold drinks, 18% consider that they are due to viruses or infectious processes, 32% of mothers say that in the face of a respiratory infection, they prefer to care their children by providing natural remedies, 26% prefers to take them to a medical care institution. Respiratory infections represent a major health problem in children under 5 years of age. It is important to establish education actions aimed at the mothers of the child population, according to the deficiencies identified in the results.
