Abstract

The International Programme on Landslides (IPL) was established by the 2006 Tokyo Action Plan. The IPL is managed by the IPL Global Promotion Committee consisting of the International Consortium on Landslides, and five United Nations Organizations related to landslides and global NGOs in the field of science and engineering. This initiative is a part of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. The current IPL developed from the initial International Programme on Landslides initiated at the first session of the Board of Representatives of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris in November, 2002. The secretariat of the Programme is hosted by the secretariat of ICL located in Kyoto, Japan. This chapter outlines the IPL, and its background, the 2006 Tokyo Action Plan, major activities of IPL including "Landslides" Journal of International Consortiumon Landslides,World Landslide Forums, World Centres of Excellence, IPL projects and their management.
