Abstract

In this paper a knowledge-based scheduling system (KBSS) designed for an automated manufacturing environment is presented. Frames and production rules have been applied to represent declarative and procedural scheduling knowledge. A heuristic algorithm is incorporated into the knowledge-based system. The KBSS allows us to consider basic and alternative process plans. Each process plan specifies manufacturing resources, such as machines, tools, fixtures and material handling carriers, as well as their sequence. The knowledge-based system is illustrated with a numerical example. The heuristic algorithm is the key component of the system. The system has been tested on a number of scheduling problems. Computational experience proves that the solutions generated are of a quality acceptable in industry. © 1990.
