Abstract

Several populations of coated vesicles were distinguished by transmission electron microscopy in five species of cryptophycean flagellates. Coated vesicles were found in association with the plasmalemma, the Golgi complex and the contractile vacuole complex. The populations of vesicles were distinguished not only by their location, but also by the size of the vesicles and by the thickness and appearance of their membranes and membrane coats. Populations of vesicles from equivalent sites in different species had similar characteristics. The cytoplasmic membrane coat associated with two populations of vesicles has a morphological appearance consistent with it being made of clathrin. © 1982.
