A method to characterize a protein by peptide mapping is decribed. It involves a combination of limited proteolysis and differential staining with the dye 'stains all' which allows the identification of the proteolysis fragments by their size and colour. When this procedure was used for tubulin, specific acidic fragments were identified and localized in the molecule. © 1986.
