The unsymmetric compartmental proligand HLO reacts with Ni(OAc)2 and NaSCN, to give the homodinuclear complex [Ni2(LO)(AcO)(SCN)2] (3), whereas the unsymmetric compartmental proligand HLN reacts with Ni(OAc)2 in the presence of either [BF4]- or [PF6]- counteranions to give the tetranuclear complexes [Ni4(L1)2(OAc)4][X]2, (4a, X = PF6; 4b, X = BF4), in which ligand modification has occurred such that the iminic pendant arm of the proligand has been converted into an amidic pendant arm. The crystal structures of 3 and (4b)2·3CH3OH·2H2O are reported. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
