Abstract

A finite strip method of analysis is briefly described which can predict bifurcative local buckling and nonlinear postlocal buckling of plate assemblies. The method is applied to simple flange outstands, either with a simply supported or built-in restrained edge. The elastic behaviour of the outstand in the postlocally buckled range is examined, including the reduction in stiffness, effect of initial geometric imperfections and the accuracy of an empirical design formula. © 1994.
