This chapter discusses the electrochemical detectors. The number of compounds that are electrochemically active within the potential range of solvent decomposition is low. More important, the selectivity is different from that of a UV absorption system. The limits of detection obtained in electro analysis are impressive. With special techniques, determinations of M concentrations can be achieved. The technique limits the choice of the solvent, as this must have a sufficient electrical conductivity. In other detection techniques, e.g. UV and fluorescence, the choice of eluent is also of ten limited. The drawback is far more important in electro analysis, however, as a high conductivity always means a high polarity of the liquid phase, and the limitation in the choice of chromatographic phase systems is considerable. © 1978, Elsevier B.V.
